4-year old Mollie was diagnosed with pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia on June 17, 2008. This is her story.

Today was the big haircut. I cut my hair short a few months back, right after Lucy was born. Mollie came with me and said she *might* want to get hers cut too. It never happened... Now that she's starting to loose some of her golden locks (yes, it makes me tear up), we thought it might help if she cut it short. I guess nothing can really soften the blow.
Mollie asked if people would make fun of her because her hair was falling out. We talked about how some people might not understand why her hair is falling out, that, of course, we still love her, it's going to grow back, that she might want to wear hats or a wig so people won't notice ask much (if she wants to). Then, after this long, emotional conversation about her hair she said, "Well maybe I can wear leaves on my head because leaves are really pretty."
We're working on trying to meet some other kids going through chemo which would really help.
Anyway, I like her hair short- I think it looks cute (and so does Mollie). And the really good news is she likes wearing bandanas and other head coverings (thanks auntie Liv).

ReplyDeleteOh I think the new 'do is too cute!! I'm glad the head coverings are working so far. I cracked up when I read her comment about wearing leaves-- I wonder if there's a lei of just leaves? I'll send one if I find it-- she'll feel like an Olympian with their laurel leaves :)
ReplyDeletesuper cute! maybe she can convince lala to go short too. clearly all the rage now. S, i have a package full of head coverings ready to mail to mollie. i just have to get back to the post office. did you get a package from us yet? if not, i fear i should have opted for the insurance after all. :(
ReplyDeleteNea, I did get your package (and the coffee was very well received!!). We're working on thank you notes, but I've been distracted by trying to find new blinds for the living room. ..
ReplyDeleteMollie is as cute as ever and her spirit flows through her picture. Nadira and I pray for Mollie and your family to stay happy and loved every day. Dira voices so much compassion when she talks about Mollie that it touches my heart. She's working on her "pen pal" picture and should be finished over the weekend. Then all the glue will be dry.
ReplyDeleteOkay... so I learned not to click on something after I finally got my comment to post...
ReplyDeleteAnyway... what I said was that Mollie's spirit is wonderful, you can feel it coming through her picture. Nadira and I pray for her and your family to be able to hold onto some love and happiness every day. Dira speaks with so much compassion for Mollie that it touches my heart. She's working on her "pen pal" picture with the theme being rainbows (her favorite). All the glue should be dry this weekend and it will be done by Monday.
Luv to you all and here's a big hug ((( )))

Leaves! That sounds just like the Flower Fairies! (I've been on a fairy kick, and am planning a Flower Fairy Day for the bookstore in August. We could make leaf wreaths!) There is a new book coming out next week that I want to send Mollie, but looking at all the packages you've recieved, should I wait a while?
ReplyDeleteG- the way we've been doing things is opening the cards and then saving most of the packages so she can pick one out when she has something scary to do- like spinal taps, chemo, etc. So far, the technique is working. Yours are perfect because I know they are books and they are all individually wrapped. And we did the Tiara one the other day- I'll have to take and post some pictures of Mollie wearing her tiara.
