Poison and pirates

6-mercaptopurine is the oral chemotherapeutic agent Mollie is taking now, and pretty much every day for the next 2.5 years. This link says we should handle it with gloves and keep it away from food prep areas. It is hard to give your child a drug that you're not even supposed to touch with your bare skin! Let us just hope that it works and does not cause any liver damage. Her appetite seems low, maybe this is normal, or maybe an effect of the drugs? I am trying to make sure she eats at least a little protein at each meal, even if it's just a glass of milk.

In other news, Mollie's personality is back to normal. She's been into pirates the last few days. And she's quite the chatterbox. She likes to talk about ponies, pirates, princesses, and Tahoe. And a million other things. In fact, it's hard to get her to be quiet for more than a few minutes!

  2. Pirates! She's moving up the age chain for cool things, before you know it she'll be into vampires. (You know they actually successfully combined the two in a Y.A. book called Vampirates - too old for Mollie though). Princess Pirates, that might be the thing. Maybe they travel to different islands and steal ponies. Sorry not steal, SAVE.

  3. Yay for her being more up in the energy department, but agree it's so scary to dole out drugs with those warnings on them, especially for such a long time too. Hope the energy and chattering keeps up!

  5. Oh God! Don't get me started on cockroaches!! They are absolutely HUGE here! And the fly!! Nobody calls them roaches though- they're palmetto bugs or water bugs. Luckily only a few manage to make their way into the house, but that's too many for me!!

  6. Oh my gosh! In a total diversion from Mollie (and you) who is so often in my thoughts, the talk of water bug/cock roaches bring back all sorts of childhood memories! Raised for many years in Tucson, we learned to do a quick knock of our shoes before we put our feet into them, lest we crunch a critter who was nesting down in the toe area. UGH!!!! Wait til you find them coming up the tub drain! UGH! again!

The Bay Area is definitely easier in the bug category!

  7. Ack, I don't think we were told not to touch the pills.

I hope this phase goes smoothly. We are thinking of you guys!
